Hard to believe that this is our last week of January! It certainly has flown by and it has been a busy time in our classroom. We are about half way through our animal research and it has been amazing to see students finding answers to their questions while using books, ipads and computers. You will be able to see all their hard work at our celebration of learning in March.
The home reading journals seem to be going well so far and I have seen some great questions and summaries of the books. I cannot stress how beneficial it is for you to be reading with your child every night. Even if it is for just 15 minutes it makes a huge impact on their ability to master sight words and become comfortable with more challenging books. Thank you for all your efforts in reading with your child. It really makes a difference!
In math we are reviewing base 10s and place value before we go into our double digit addition unit with the grade 2s. To practice this at home you can give your child any number between 0-100 and ask them how many tens and ones it has (or rods and cubes). They can either tell you or draw them for you. Being comfortable with place value an understanding that we can make groups of ten in bigger numbers is an important foundation for double digit addition and subtraction.
We are also practicing our ability to recall our basic math facts. For grade 1s this is addition and subtraction sentences with answers from 0-5 and for grade 2s it is 0-10. If you would like to practice this with your child at home I can send some sheets with your child for you. Encourage them to use mental math strategies such as counting on from the bigger number, doubles +1 or -1 (ex. 3+4=? 3+3=6 6+1=7 therefore 3+4=7), or thinking addition for subtraction questions. (ex. 4-2=? 2+?=4). If you have any questions about these strategies or would like extra practice please let me know :)
