Welcome back after what was a nice restful break! We are ready to hit the ground running and get right back into our learning.
Talent Show audition permission forms need to be back by Thursday, April 7th. I will be doing auditions with students in the classroom between April 11th to April 13th. I will then submit names of eligible performers who have practiced and are able to perform in front of a large audience to the Talent Show Committee.
On April 14th permission forms will be sent out for eligible students so they are able to attend noon hour rehearsals and participate in the final performance on the 28th. I am looking forward to seeing our students share their many talents with us!
Language Arts
We are going to be starting our Fairy Tales and Fractured Fairy tales unit. We will be exploring all the well loved fairy tales as well as some with twists to them. We will explore character traits, setting, plot, problems, solutions and so much more! If your child has a favourite fairy tale they are more than welcome to bring books to share with the class.
We are also kicking off Book clubs this week for some of our readers. They will be reading an individual book on their own and then come together as a club twice a week to share what they have learned and discuss what the authours purpose was in their book. We have our book logs ready to go and could not be more excited :)
Math
We are continuing to work on our mental math strategies as we add and subtract numbers from 0-20. I will be trying to post on a strategy on the blog each week with some practice questions as well. For this week's strategy we are practicing thinking addition for subtraction.
ex. 9-5=? For this question I am going to think "What plus 5 equals 9?" I would then count on from 5 up to nine, which would give me my answer of 4.
ex. 15-8=? For this question I am going to think about what doubles would equal 15. Now there aren't any doubles that equal 15 but I do know that 8+8=16 and since 15 is on less than 16 I take one away from one of the 8s in my question to get my answer of 7.
We have had a great time learning about double digit addition before the break and now we are delving into double digit subtraction! Regrouping in subtraction is one of the trickiest things for our young mathematicians so I will be sending a checklist home that will help your child as they practice with double digits. Below is a great video that can help explain regrouping!
